The history of the watch of the Swiss Jura is inextricably linked to the genius of Jean Richard Daniel. This young silversmith of the mountains neuchatelinas realized, to disassemble a pocket watch that a trafficker English had given him to make good, the importance of this industry for their country disinherited.
It was the first organizer of the “establishment”: the division of labor watchmaker. He knew how to manufacture it or do produce some pieces in the Jura, while others were bought in Geneva. Thanks to this division of labor, the high valleys of the canton of Neuchatei counted to his death (1741) with several hundred watchmakers mechanistic.
Probably because of this personal initiative, the mountains neuchatelinas could illuminate a large number of famous watchmakers, such as Pierre Jaquet-Droz, Ferdinand Berthoud, Abraham Louis Perreiet and Abraham Louis Breguet.
In 1754 there were 464 clockmakers Neuchatei; in 1764, 1203, that figure rises to 2087 in 1788 and 3634 in 1778 and 4316 in 1808.
The town of Le Locle he has a statue erected in a garden square.
